The Panda Bear Sea Angel: Cute or Fierce?

You might hear "Panda Bear Sea Angel" and picture a fluffy swimming bear, but the reality is much slimier! This creature is actually a type of **sea slug** known scientifically as a *pteropod*.

They don't have shells like garden snails. Instead, they are gelatinous and mostly transparent. The "Panda" nickname comes from the cute black markings on their antennae and internal organs that you can see right through their skin!

**Warning:** Don't confuse them with the viral "Skeleton Panda Sea Squirt" (which is a tunicate). Our Sea Angel is a free-swimming slug that literally "flies" through the water.

They look adorable drifting in the current, but Sea Angels are actually **viscous predators**. Their favorite snack? Their swimming cousins called "Sea Butterflies."

When a Sea Angel smells food, its cute "face" splits open! It shoots out six terrifying **hooked tentacles** (buccal cones) to grab the shell of the Sea Butterfly.

It then uses a special rasping tongue called a *radula* to scrape the prey out of its shell. It’s less "Disney Princess" and more "Alien Movie" once lunchtime starts.

How does a slug catch prey? It evolves wings! The "angel" part of their name comes from wing-like appendages called **parapodia**.

Unlike most slugs that crawl, the Sea Angel flaps these parapodia to hover and zip through the ocean depths. They are found in freezing waters, from the Arctic to the Antarctic (and some deep waters off California).

Because they are transparent, they are almost invisible to predators—until they eat! Sometimes, the colorful food they eat (like bright orange sea butterflies) makes them visible, so they have to digest quickly to stay hidden.
