How to get better

How to actually use this

Most people treat a pub quiz as something that happens to them. You turn up, you get asked about 1970s football, you lose, you shrug. If you have ever gone home wondering how do I get better at pub quizzes, the answer is not more facts. Quiz performance is trainable, and it is trainable in a very specific way: by being asked things.

That is the whole design of this page. Play a round, look at the breakdown at the end, and note which category dragged you down. Almost nobody is evenly bad. People are excellent at four rounds and hopeless at one, and that one round is where the match is decided. Fix it and your team's score moves more than it would from a month of general reading.

Turning that weak round into recall practice is the whole idea behind NerdSip. Name the topic, get a five-minute course, answer a question at the end of every lesson, then let the review rounds hand the same material back a fortnight later, which is roughly when you would otherwise have lost it again.

The fastest gain: play twenty questions, find your worst round, then study only that round for a week. Broad revision feels productive and does almost nothing. Targeted revision on a known weak spot is the entire game.

Want to be the one your team cannot win without? Then swap a slice of your social media time for NerdSip. Ten minutes of scrolling a day, spent on your weakest round instead, is how a pub quiz team gets its quiet specialist. Here are the best apps to replace social media, and why we are on that list.

Pub quiz or trivia night?

Same game, different passport. Pub quiz is what it is called in Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Trivia night or bar trivia is the American and Canadian name. The format barely differs: teams of two to six, six to eight rounds of ten, a picture round somewhere in the middle, a tiebreaker where you guess a number and the closest wins.

The one real difference is emphasis. British quizzes lean harder on geography, history and football. American ones lean harder on pop culture, sport and brand trivia. If you are travelling, that is the adjustment to make. Pub quizzes turned into a fixture of British pubs in the 1970s: in 1976 Sharon Burns and Tom Porter were already running 32 teams in three leagues in southern England, according to the history of the pub quiz.

If you want the American version of this page, we built one: trivia questions and answers by category, with sixty printed on the page and a ten-question round you can play in any single category.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get better at pub quizzes?

Practise recalling answers rather than reading facts. Play a scored quiz, note which rounds you lose points in, and study only those. Most people lose a pub quiz in one or two specific rounds, usually sport, music or geography, and fixing a single weak round is worth more than broad revision. Ten minutes of testing yourself beats an hour of reading. The full method is here, and there is a six-minute video version of the daily system if you would rather watch it.

What rounds are in a typical pub quiz?

A standard quiz runs six to eight rounds of ten questions. The near-universal ones are general knowledge, music, film and TV, sport, geography and history. Common extras include food and drink, science and nature, literature and art, technology, a picture round and a host's wildcard. We break down every round and how to prepare for each separately.

Why do I blank on answers I know at quiz night?

Because recognising a fact and retrieving it are different skills. Reading trivia builds recognition, which feels like learning but collapses under time pressure, noise and a couple of pints. Retrieval practice, meaning testing yourself with the answer hidden, builds the pathway you actually need at the table. There is more on why this happens.

How many questions are in this pub quiz?

500 across ten rounds, fifty in each. Play ten, twenty or thirty at a time, filter to the categories you want, and set the difficulty. Your browser remembers which questions you have seen, so nothing repeats until you have worked through the pool.

Is this pub quiz free?

Yes. No signup, no paywall, no limit. Every question shows its answer, and the end-of-round breakdown tells you exactly where you are losing points.

Can I use these questions to host my own quiz?

Yes. Every question comes with its answer, and the questions are grouped into clean rounds of fifty, so pulling ten from a category gives you a ready-made round. For a full plan with scoring, timing and 40 questions to read aloud, see how to host a pub quiz.
